MALACCA

COLOURFUL MALACCA

Malacca is the third smallest Malaysian state after Perlis and Penang. Malacca is located on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Straits of Malacca, about 147 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur between the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. No historian has been able up to now to pin-point the year Malacca was founded. Going by the State government's celebration of the 600th anniversary of the founding in August 1990, it could be deduced that Malacca was founded in 1390.

Malacca was listed as a World Heritage City by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in July 2008, a feat achieved after four years of consecutive bids to the international body. Visiting Malacca is a unique experience with a rich historical and cultural background from previous Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. There are some interesting legends surrounding the foundation and naming of Malacca. Another attraction in Malacca is Eye on Malaysia. Across the road from the Majestic, a wooden walkway lines Malacca River and is part of the 4.5km stretch that has undergone a 15-year river rehabilitation project.

Malacca is a center of Peranakan culture. When Chinese settlers originally came to Malacca as miners, traders and coolies, they took local brides (of Javanese, Batak, Achenese, etc descent) and adopted many local customs. The result of this is an interesting fusion of local and Chinese cultures. The men are addressed as Babas and the women Nonyas by their servants meaning Master and Mistress.

Besides that, when the tourist is in the West Malaysia, the best way to travel to Malacca is by road. Travelling down sourth via the North-South Highway from the KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport). If tourist is travelling from KL, the journey is take about 2 hours. From Johor Bahru heading north, it's only taken 2.5 hours away. In the journey getting to Malacca, there are many public rest areas, stop-overs, petrol kiosks and strategic view points along the highway so the journey will be quite pleasant if one needs to have a rest from the long distance driving. From the north like KL and the south like Johor Bahru, even there is different way to go to Malacca, the tourist also will be charge for 3 times of toll fees to get to Malacca and the last toll will be the Air Keroh Toll for the both north and south.
